This is the first trick you should learn, and it's also the most basic trick as well.

You can do this at any speed, so if you're learning, approach the rail/curb at a slow speed. When you're near the rail/curb, keep your eyes on the obstacle on a specific spot, jump while turning 90 degrees in the air, and land on the obstacle in between the two middle wheels of your skates. If you do not spread your legs, your momentum will sweep you, and you will fall. It is much easier to land with your legs apart.

You can do almost every trick backside, but the easiest of them all is the plain old backside grind. This is only just a little more difficult than the frontside grind, since you can't see the obstacle you're grinding the same way you can when you're frontside grinding.

When you approach the obstacle, it is even more important that you spot the place where you want to land. Practise jumping up and down on steps or something like that first, and be sure that you have it every single time. As I mentioned be...

This is another basic trick, that is very easy to master! Put your back foot in soul position - that is: put your back foot parallel to the obstacle you're grinding, so that the outside sole of your boot is on the obstacle. Instead of grinding with the rail/curb between your middle wheels, you turn the souling foot 90 degrees, and plant the outside soul on the obstacle. The foot you're resting on the outside sole is known as your soul foot. In the soul grind, your back foot is in soul position, while your front fo...

The acid grind is very similar to the soul grind. The only thing you do differently, is that you turn your front non-souling foot on the other side so that it grinds on the outside frame instead of the inside like in a soul grind.

The weight should be on the souling skate - plain and simple! When doing topsides, this is easier than the soul! When doing a topside soul, you cannot have your upper body over the obstacle you're grinding, but you need to have an angle of about 45 degrees. When doing a topside acid, your ...

The mizou can be one of the most stylish tricks there is, but if done the wrong way, it looks really dull! It is also one of the easiest tricks you can do, some people even say it is easier than the soul grind.

Put your weight forward on the soul foot. Try to get as low as possible to add style - so that the non-souling foot is grinding on the inside boot and not the frame. To maintain balance, turn your body as you would with a backside. Otherwise, you will not be able to keep the trailing foot in the same position.

The Mistrial is a mizou with the back foot in royale position. In other words, the back foot is grinding on the outside frame and outside boot as well.

It is important to put as much weight as you can on the front foot, and lean forwards. If not, you will fall backwards and hurt yourself really bad. This can be hard in the beginning if you're used to doing mizous and sweatstances. Since it is hard to bend your back foot so much that it is resting on the outside frame and boot, you almost have to make the back skate ...

Sweatstance is another name for a topside mizou, but is a little different than the mizou. It originated from the kindgrind. This trick is a good one for practising topsides, since you can see your souling skate - you can not do that when you're topside souling.

When approaching the obstacle, spot your landing. It might help if you bend your souling ancle a little, so it is ready for the topside. Land with the souling foot at the spot in topside position. This is the main thing you have to concentrate on, the back foot will come automaticly. Your weight should be on the front foot....

Kindgrind is another name for an alleyoop topside mizou, or an alleyoop sweatstance, although the kindgrind was 'invented' before the sweatstance.

I found it a lot easier to practise sweatstances before I did the kindgrind, especially because I wasn't good at topsides. The sweatstance is really easy, so when you have got that, you just go backwards instead. When doing this trick on halfpipes and quarterpipes, it is not a big change from going backwards or forwards, but when you're going down a rail, this is a little harder. I find it easiest to launch the trick with a...

The position of your feet is somehow like a mizou: Your front foot is in soul position, and your back foot is grinding on the outside boot or frame.

Once you've got it, there is not much to it. The hardest part of the trick is landing it - once you've locked in, it isn't a big problem to do the whole obstacle. You have to concentrate on having all your weight on your souling foot.

The typical beginner mistake is that the skater can't judge exactly how high up the obstacle is, or is concentrating to...

Royale is a variation of the frontside grind. Your front foot is like in a normal frontside, but your back foot is grinding on the outside edge. To do so, you need to bring your back foot in, and push your ankle over, so that you ride on the outside frame, - you might ride on the outside boot as well.

Lots of skaters practise the royale by landing in frontside, and then slowly switching to royale, but this kind of practise will not make you any better, you'll just have to relearn the whole trick from scratch. The la...

We prefer calling it fahrvergnugen, but other sources call it alleyoop royale, full torque, reverse royale. In the beginning, it was only called fahrvergnugen, but I guess people couldn't figure out how to spell it. Just for you who doesn't know - 'fahrvergnugen' is German, and means 'driving pleasure' - and that is really what this grind is.
Makios look good, and they are easily mastered, if you have learned the basics as soul grinds. Basicly, a makio grind is just a soul grind, but you lift the non-souling front foot. Preferebly, it is also grabbed with one of your hands. I'll give you some tips if you just can't get the trick down:

The fishbrain is a topside makio - in other words, you are topside souling with one foot, and grabbing the other with your hand.

Unlike the makio, this trick isn't as easy. When doing the makio, you can have your upper body over your souling foot - but that isn't possible when doing a topside - here you need to have your upper body to one of the sides...

Keep your weight in the front end of the souling foot or on the royale foot, so that the soul foot will not catch dirt or fall into the unsmooth surface and make your fall backwards. To not fall forwards, you have to lean backwards, and make sure that your heel on your soul foot is down at all times.

It is preferably done grinding on the outside frame and outside boot as well, like in a royale. If you can do the royale, this should not be a big problem. If you can't do the royale, - well go learn the royale first!

The instructions for this trick is close to the instruction we gave for the backslide. If you can do fahrvergnugens well, then you're not far from doing this trick either.
Tired of doing the same tricks all the time? Then I guess it's time to throw in some variations in those grinds. Here are some that will make your grind more stylish, better looking, and a lot harder:

Backside:
Every trick that doesn't involve a soul foot can be done backside. Backside is doing a grind opposite of the frontside grind. If the obstacle you're about to grind is on the right, you should spin left to land in the backside position, and right if you want to land in the frontside position.

They might seem hard to learn in the beginning, just as it was when learning souls. When practising topside soul tricks, a good thing is to imagine that you are to do a farside soul instead. When you've learned this, try to land the trick with your skate horizontal on the obstacle.

Topside souls are harder than ordinary souls, but also looks really good. This is mainly because it's hard to do a topside ...

Guide to rails

I found this guide to Rails by Arlo Eisenberg in about 1998. Hope you can use it:

Rails are more mental than anything else... The most important key in doing them is concentration, commitment, and confidence.

In a rail, you want to look for something that is not too fat so that you can get on it. You also want to look for something not too steep, so that you wont go flying once you jump on it. You can do the extremes, but they are much harder and dangerous to learn on. In addition to that, if you are using all big wheels, you may want to look into an all tiny wheels, or anti-rocker...

It shouldn't be in backslide position nor torque position - but straight on. Here are a few tips that will help you to nail them:

Speed!
Speed makes all tricks easier - fastslides are no exception.

Balance:
Where most people fail on the fastslide, is where to put their balance. Compared to almost all other tricks, you have to lean so much more forward. My way of finding the balance is having the grinding leg straight. My upp...

Cess slides are grinding on top of a flat surface without any edges - you just slide your boots on the surface - could be the asfalt or the middle of a curb where you're sliding from one side to the other.

The trick has also been called a "powerslide". But since that originates from the skateboard term "powerslide", I've chosen to stick with the rollerblading term.

360

The 360 is considered a basic spin when skating street, and there isn't much to it!

1. Stand still on a flat surface. Now try to jump up in the air, and try to spin! Look over your shoulder to the side you're spinning, it makes your momentum cary you around to the side. When you can do this, and then landing facing the same way you did when you set off, you have done a 360.

2. Go to a gap, flyout, launchbox, or something you can set off from. Skate up to it with a moderate speed and spin around just like you did on flat ground. Don't pull your legs up to your body yet...

540

The 540 is a bit harder than the 360. Some skaters have troubles in the beginning doing this trick. It is not that they can't do it, but they will not let themselves. There isn't that much to it!

Like you would with any spin, you should also practise this trick on flat ground first. Think that you are going to spin like in a 360, but you are also going to land the opposite of what you were facing when you started to turn. For instance, if you are going forwards, think of spinning a lot, and landing backwards. So it is same thought like a 180 that should go through your head - ...

This trick is quite hard to learn if you can't do a normal 540. If you can't do one, you really should learn to before you move on to the bio.

First, find a suitable bed at home and take the mattress off it. Put the mattress on the floor in front of your sofa or something of similar height. Second, lay out some cushions next to the mattress.

After you have done all this, stand on top of the sofa, and jump as if you were doing a 540. But this time, instead of keeping your shoulders flat as they spin, bring your right shoulder (if you spin anti-clockwise, and left shoulder f...

Misty flipA misty flip is similar to a Mctwist only instead of doing it on a vert ramp and landing back into the ramp, you are flipping out of a bowl or over a fun box. It is sort of like a side flip. This is how do misty flips with no skates but with skates it is basically the same only when you would run, you would skate and stuff like that.1. The first step to do, is to practise the misty flip without skates on. Choose a spot where you can practise; for instance something soft like sand, or you could practise jumping in to a pool (water).

There are many different techniques of riding stairs. I don't know them all, but only the one that I feel most comfortable with:

When riding stairs, it is easiest going backwards or fakie - although it might look easier going forwards it is not...believe me! If you're beginner at riding stairs, it is a good idea to find a staircase with a handrail next to it, so that you can grab it if you loose your balance, or go too slow. Don't attempt one in the beginning longer than 10 steps or so - choose long and flat steps.

You can't ride stairs going slow, since it is yo...

There are different ways to do a wallride, and different ways to think about how you perform the trick - just like all the other tricks! My way would be like this:

Approach the wall at about a 45 degree (or even a little less) angle. The faster you are going the longer you will ride. Jump at a fair distance from the wall. If you jump too late you will not be able to get your skates onto the wall in time and you will just end up splatting on you side and looking like an idiot. As you are jumping towards the wall bring your skates up and perpendicular to the wall. Kind of tilt your body aw...

Flatspins

A flat spin is a spin done horizontally in the air. To do these, you need to be able to get a good amount of air, so that you can execute the trick.

Pump hard up the ramp, and give your transition a slight curve, as if you were going for a grind (the way you want to spin). As you start to air, you will feel as if you are lying on your side. At this point, you want to bring your legs round hard, so that you start spinning. This will get you rotating around your belly button (if you do it right), and all you have to do is hold the position, until you have gone full circle, at which point,...

A crooked spin is merly an extension of a usual spin. i.e.: if you can do a normal 540, you should try a crooked 540, wich means you spin 540 but with an angle of (more or less) 45 degrees in the air. Try this: When you're about to pull the (i.e.) 540 (clockwise) and you've prepared to make the "swing" move, try to swing from your left upper side to the right lower side (the move is kinda like bio, but your NOT flipping over)

All tricks learned on the ground will improve your chances of doing them on the vert. So this is nearly an easy move for those who can do them on ground.

The 360 should only be tried on halfpipes that have a vert section. Pump the vert until you reach the coping on the other side of the vert. The attempt should begin as soon as you leave the transition area. It's important that your start here doing the trick, so you have the time to complete the move, before you hit the transition area.

For this trick, you need be able to catch several feet of air. Pump really hard on the ramp so you can get the biggest air possible. As you leave the ramp behind, let your feet rise above your head. As you feel yourself go upside down (or the half-pipe comes back into your vision), look up/tilt your head back. This will get your rotating the rest of the flip, and if things really go badly you will land on your knees or skates and not on your head. Remember, in just about every tricks the head leads where the body goes.

A brainless is by definition a back-flip with a 540 spin done with it, although it's actually more of a 180. If it's done right, then it might be one of the better looking tricks that can be done on a half-pipe. If done wrong, it's messy.

To do this trick, you have to make sure that you can get at least as much air off the half-pipe as you are tall. So if you're six feet tall, make sure you can get at least six foot of air. This is to make sure that you don't head-butt the coping.

Start visualize yourself doing the trick. Going up backwards - and then doing a flip. If you got the idea of how you should turn, then gor for it!
Doing a frontflip is only about 4 things - your position in the ramp, the speed at which you turn, letting go, and landing. Got it? Ok, I will try to explain the four things.

First off, you have to have a decent bit of height to land...

Grinding a coping

When grinding a coping, you have to think differently, than if you're grinding a rail or curb.

Usually on halfpipes and quarter pipes, the coping is leveled with the platform, so that you can't have a 90 degree angle, and your weight placed directly above the coping - in that case, your wheels would touch the platform, and make you stop grinding. So obviously you need to lean out, grinding on the coping with an angle closer to 45 degrees than to 90 degrees. This is only when you're doing non-soul tricks.

When doing soul tricks, you need to have your entiry body placed...

Approach the coping as you would doing an air, and when you reach the it - bend over and put both hands on it. The tricky part in this flip is the 180 wich must be done IN the flip. You could easily practise this
